How To | Make VOIP calls without a SIP server in Q-SYS
Learn to make Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VOIP) calls without the need for a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) server, by using Q-SYS.
Procedure
The Q-SYS Softphone not only gives you the ability to connect to a Voice-over-IP telephone system (IP-PBX), you can also use the Softphone component in an unregistered mode, which allows making calls and connecting to other Q-SYS Softphones within the same Q-SYS Core processor. QSC uses Q-SYS software to implement the Softphones without any special telephony hardware, allowing multiple Softphone instances to run simultaneously on a single Core. The maximum number of Softphones that can be placed in a design is: Core 110f = 4; all other Cores = 64.
Below is a very simple illustration of how you can set up VOIP communication between 4 physical zones using a single (centralized) Core 110f without any special telephony hardware. Remember, there are a number of other ways to achieve this based on your requirements.
- Softphone Control (Dial Pad) – Touch Controller (TSC) used for Zone Audio Control
- Softphone Audio Input – Microphones used for Zone Audio Reinforcement
- Softphone Audio Output – Speakers / Amplifiers used for Zone Audio Reinforcement
Softphone Settings (Core Manager > Softphones)
- Username: This is the number you use to call the Softphone.
- CID Name: This is the name to use for Caller ID.
- Proxy: The IP address of the Core 110f. In the above example, LAN A = 192.168.0.102.
- Register with Proxy: Select No, as we are using the Softphone in unregistered mode.
Note
The Softphone does not support usage within the 169.254.x.x IP address range. If the Core is configured to use DHCP, reserve the Core’s IP address on the DHCP server so that the Core always gets the same IP Address.
Successful Call between Softphone - 101 and 102
